Mystery of missing TD

Sir -- Now that Fine Gael has formed a coalition government with Labour, mention should be made of a famous vote taken in the Dail on August 16, 1927. It was a vote of no confidence in the Cumann na nGaedhal government of WT Cosgrave and was proposed by Thomas Johnson of the Labour Party, who had made a pact with Fianna Fail and the National League Party to form a Labour-led government.

Alderman Jenks represented the National League Party for Sligo-Leitrim and was strangely absent for the crucial vote. The government survived on the Ceann Comhairle's casting vote.

Many colourful stories have grown up over the alderman's absence; one being that Major Bryan Cooper of Markree Castle (Dublin TD) entertained John Jenks in Buswell's Hotel with war time stories and he missed the calls to return to the Dail.
