Myers bias hits new levels

KEVIN Myers’s myopic detestation of physical-force Republicanism is nothing new to his readers, but in his article ‘To venerate Collins is to exult in a bloody legacy of atrocity’ (Irish Independent, August 24), he has plumbed fresh depths of historical bias and partiality.

While all sectarian killings are to be deplored, and while the IRA (in both its old incarnation and new) departed far from non-sectarian Republican ideals when they began killing Protestants, the fact is that both the Altnaveigh massacre (the one I presume Kevin refers to as taking place in south Armagh in 1922 and instigated by Frank Aiken) and the White Cross killings in 1976 were direct reactions to provocative Protestant killings of Catholics.
