Mr Myers needs a French lesson

I AGREE with much of what Kevin Myers has to say in praise of the French (Irish Independent, January 15).

If, however, they had successfully invaded Ireland as they nearly did during the Napoleonic war, we might have had a different story.

They would then have replaced the English as our colonial masters and we might now be using French to denounce them as insufferably arrogant or worse.

The Oxford dictionary disagrees with Kevin Myers on the origins of the word politics. It comes from the Greek word for city -- polis.

Of course the word democracy also comes from Greek.

And the words police and force both originate in Latin, not French.
