Mr Myers cites fiction but Gaza crisis is fact

Kevin Myers tells us that "according to Mathilde Redmatn, deputy director of the International Red Cross in Gaza, there is in fact no humanitarian crisis (in Gaza) at all. But by God, there is one in Syria. . ." (Irish Independent, June 24).

While there is undoubtedly a humanitarian crisis in Syria, there is no such person as Mathilde Redmatn, a name that has been cited in recent months by innumerable reporters, as reluctant as Mr Myers to check the "facts" in Israeli press releases.

There is, however, a Mathilde De Riedmatten, who in an interview published on the International Red Cross website in May of this year stated that "the strict limits on imports (to Gaza) and the almost absolute ban on exports imposed by Israel (made) economic recovery impossible".
