More women in the Oireachtas

Sir -- As a self-declared "enlightened individual", Nora Bennis, in her letter (Sunday Independent, December 4, 2011), denounces efforts to increase the proportion of women in the Oireachtas from its present low level. She declares such efforts to be an "insult to intelligence", "irrational", "illogical" and "not in the public interest".

Despite being over 50 per cent of the electorate, women have comprised only five per cent of all TDs elected since the 1918 general election -- when women first got the vote.

I think that fact is even more of an insult to intelligence, irrational, illogical and not in the public interest.
