More to Leonard
Sir -- It was sad to see the late great Dublin playwright Hugh Leonard ungraciously dismissed by The Irish Times as being a writer of domestic comedies about Dublin's middle classes.
Leonard won a Tony award on Broadway for his great play Da, a wonderful exploration of the relationship between himself and his working-class father that stands comparison with any drama about fathers and sons anywhere in the world.
He was also, as readers of the Sunday Independent will know, a satirist of some note who, (at no little risk to himself) took on the gunmen and their shadows during our recent troubled past.
But maybe that was his crime; that and being popular.
