Mixed signals on health service

Your report (Irish Independent, November 16 ) that 1,100 beds are now closed in our public hospitals made for very worrying reading indeed and comes hot on the heels of a story that broke over the weekend concerning an elderly cancer patient who had to be treated on a chair at one of our "centres of excellence" in Galway.

The hospitals' supply of 92 trolleys were fully booked so a chair was pressed into service, and this despite your report also telling us that there are 334 public beds lying idle in the HSE West area where the lady is a patient.

As these reports began to register, I was reminded that only last week the National Treatment Purchase Fund was publicly beating its chest telling us how much taxpayer's money it was handing over to private hospitals to treat public patients.
