Ministers need a lesson in humility
DR Garret FitzGerald tells a story about how his parents were holed up for several days in the Dail during a Civil War skirmish.
The comrades in question were supplied with food from the hotel next door for the duration of the incident. When normality returned, all the people detained by the conflict were presented with a bill for the food they had consumed.
Dr FitzGerald makes the point that none of these founders of our State were surprised or resentful about having to pay their way. I recall this story every time I hear or read of the extraordinary sleaze and greed of the current generation of politicians.
