Mental illness is no sort of break
Madam – Eilis O'Hanlon's article in the Life magazine (Sunday Independent, February 17, 2013) is a disgrace and disturbing.
She comments that anyone who has a nervous breakdown is "a lucky bugger – I wish it was me". She says it is "six month long lie-ins, sitting on the couch for hours watching TV, eating chocolate cake".
These comments and her article show a lack of understanding and compassion for those who develop mental health difficulties.
She does a great disservice to those people affected and to the groups and organisations who support those with mental health difficulties in these times.
Mental illness should be seen to be no different to physical illness.
My advice to Eilis O'Hanlon regarding her article is to be careful what she wishes for as mental illness is not the great break that she thinks it is.
