Meet the new boss -- same as the old boss
AS a Labour supporter, I find it extraordinary to listen to the party's ministers stating as justification for cutbacks and additional charges that the "damage was done before we came into Government" and that they therefore have no choice but to implement these policies.
I thought the election six months ago was to allow the electorate to pass its judgment on the last government and its policies.
The electorate said no to Fianna Fail and the Greens -- so why are we now being told by the new Government that ministers have no choice other than to implement the decisions of Fianna Fail and the Greens?
Democracy is about choice: our choice was to get rid of Fianna Fail and the Greens, not to continue as we were.
Our politicians are doing for Irish democracy what the bankers did for our financial institutions. They are marginalising the electorate in the full knowledge that the citizens, individually and collectively, are impotent to stop them.
