Mediocre women

Alison O'Connor concludes her article (January 28) by echoing Kathleen Lynch's hope to one day vote for a mediocre woman.

In a speech on International Women's Day 2010, our then Tanaiste Mary Coughlan noted with some degree of triumph that women controlled 75pc of the budget in the government of the day.

Given the catastrophic performance of said government, might I suggest that Alison and Kathleen have already lived their particular dream and that it might be wiser to elect people for their competence rather than their gender?

Mediocre women have done enough damage.
