Martin and Roy were well taught by Cloughie
* So Martin and Roy delivered a victory. So what? It was Latvia. So Martin and Roy delivered a soccer team that can play football. Big deal.
Both men played under one of the great managers of the game, Brian Clough. Cloughie, as he was known, was a purist. He had the right attitude to the game. He also had Peter Taylor.
A friend of mine told me of a young Irish lad who managed to make the Nottingham Forest panel once, but never played for the first team. As Cloughie tended to 'manage' more than coach, the morning of the match was the first time that he got to hear words of wisdom from the Gaffer. Would Cloughie dissect the opposition tactically? Would he inspire certain elements above and beyond their capabilities?
