Lunacy of health costs

Sir -- I would like to compliment Dr Ciara Kelly (Sunday Independent, March 14, 2010) for her wonderfully balanced article entitled 'Cost is the reason that consultants don't read X-rays'.

The two points which sum up the whole sorry mess are "the board at Tallaght Hospital should resign over the X-ray debacle, but there is a wider issue" which leads nicely to the second point: "as long as a psychiatrist in Monaghan or a hospital CEO in Tallaght earns almost as much as the US president, then we are over-paying to the point of lunacy".

Four hospital consultants cost €1m in the Republic while this would cover 12 consultants in the North. If all salaries were capped at €200,000 think of the savings this would bring into the Exchequer! We might be able to leave the beleaguered PAYE sector alone.
