Lost in translation
• A text messaging campaign has been launched this week by visually impaired people to express their frustrations in relation to the persistently poor quality of announce-ments on Irish trains.
I would agree with their campaign and would question the statement by Irish Rail that "onboard announcements are working on all intercity trains". They certainly were not serving the customer well on last Friday's 1.30 train from Cork to Dublin, as on a number of occasions a new Anglo-Celtic patois was visited upon the ears of travelling passengers, with the simultaneous transmission of announcements in English and as Gaeilge to the general bamboozlement of the listener.
Could this be a case of lost in (simultaneous) translation? Or perhaps the mischievous ghost of Flann O'Brien/Myles na gCopaleen was on the airwaves.
