Look no further for real villains

Arguing that "young people no longer have suitable role models", Ryan Kelly (Letters, February 6) starts his litany of non-models with the present Pope "who was a member of the Hitler Youth Movement".

In his memoirs (Aus meinem Leben, 1998, p.17) the then Cardinal Ratzinger (born 1927) wrote of the years following the Nazi takeover in 1933: "The Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls were introduced and connected with school, so that together with the rest my brother and my sister had to take part in their meetings and events.

"My father suffered under the fact that he now had to serve (as village policeman) a regime in which he regarded the power-holders as criminals."
