Look after our own

• I have just read Liz O'Donnell's comment on overseas aid and it fills me with fury. Miss O'Donnell does not seem to realise this country is bankrupt and we are borrowing money to send overseas in development aid.

She mentions that the aid we send is focused on basic needs; this is not correct.

Most of the aid that Ireland sends abroad is spent on governance and civic society. In 2011, we paid for training for 2,500 aspiring female political candidates in Uganda. We also spend money on their judicial system and police force.
