London riots

•One of the most disturbing things about the London riots was that, just like the first Gulf War, one was able to view the proceedings comfortably, and live, on rolling TV feeds.

When the news networks brought us the first footage of shiny, happy missiles leaving their base from aircraft carriers and accompanied them all the way to their targets, we were all blown away by the hi-tech ingenuity of it all.

Literally blown away, on the streets of Baghdad and elsewhere as we now know, were hundreds and thousands of men and women. The military found a neat way of overcoming this problem by taking away their humanity; instead they were known as "collateral damage".
