• Government plans have been announced to overhaul local government, cut the number of councillors from 1,600 to 950 and ultimately save €420m.
One of the changes within Minister Phil Hogan's reform of local government includes abolishing a councillor's ability to overrule planning permission decisions. This particular aspect of the plan has been long overdue. It eliminates the corruption that has been widespread throughout the planning procedures for years, which the Mahon Tribunal confirmed this year with findings of corruption made against numerous councillors.
This is most certainly a step in the right direction and I applaud the Government for not only recognising the need for this but acting on it. Another step in the restoration of faith in our Government? I would think so!
