Sir - In an era of economic, social and political adversity, the Garda Siochana have suffered from savage cutbacks, which reflect the broader social downturn.

So it is all the more uplifting to read about its successful initiative with Ireland's Muslim community (Sunday Independent, 8 February).

The close relationship between the Garda Racial, Intercultural and Diversity Office and Islamic leaders is essential if we are not going to follow the unfortunate template of Britain and France, where contact between the police and second and third generation Muslim citizens is defined by confrontation and suspicion.
