Let's talk figures, Mr Calleary

Sir -- I read with interest Daniel McConnell's article regarding Garda Travel & Subsistence allowances (Sunday Independent, November 13, 2011). Within the article, he states that the figures were obtained by Fianna Fail's justice spokesman, Dara Calleary. It seems that Mr Calleary was expecting to be able to make a case for his party by making the request. Was he surprised to learn that the spending when his party was in government, was almost twice the present spending rate?

Perhaps Mr Calleary would use the same process to give us information on the spending in relation to all political parties in respect of travel and subsistence during the same period. It would also be nice to have information for the same period in relation to the official foreign trips by all TDs and senators of all parties during that period, the number of civil servants that travelled with them on those occasions and the standard of travel used.
