Let's all play chicken
Madam – Having always been kept informed by your paper, I'm compelled to put pen to paper for the first time in my life. I'm months away from retirement after 50 years in the private sector and will be left with only the State pension as the very little one I had managed to pay into since the last recession was gutted by this one.
I need to shout 'STOP!' to the madness of austerity – ie, the Government, with its ostrich-like head in the sand, for five years now reducing people's incomes and asking us to spend our way out of the recession. We all know it's going to get worse, so when do we say we've had enough?
Last week's articles (Sunday Independent, March 17, 2013) by Daniel McConnell, Willie Kealy, Colm McCarthy, Ronald Quinlan, Stephen Donnelly and Brendan O'Connor I thought captured the whole picture of the country's plight. Anyone reading them could only come to the conclusion that our politicians cannot or will not do anything to alleviate the suffering our people are enduring.
