Let gravity work in giving birth

Madam -- Bernadette Carroll comments (Sunday Independent, August 26), regarding the way women in labour are treated: "Lying in a hospital bed at 70-plus, with my feet up in stirrups -- now that would be a cruel quirk of nature!"

Is this not an indictment of the medical profession that considers its convenience greater than having a woman give birth in the most natural posture, where gravity works with her rather than against her efforts?
