Lead by example

• If it's not John Bruton patronising us about Christian values of justice and sharing (which don't seem to apply to the burden he himself places on the taxpayer who is borrowing money to fund his pensions), we have Leo 'the less well off must sacrifice more' Varadkar wondering out loud about forcing redundancies on staff at the lower levels of the public sector.

If Mr Varadkar wants to have a proper debate about what further sacrifices need to be made -- and no one denies that the current burden of the public sector, in all its weird and wonderful forms is still too much to bear -- then that conversation needs to start from the top down.

He should address the burden he and people like him place on the taxpayer, which is far greater than a special needs teacher, home help or a social worker.
