Kerry gold in the rare auld times

•Now under deconstruction -- the famous old saying from the 1950s: "Tradition Favours Kerry!" Punters evicted from reliable haven!

With due deference to Colm O'Rourke, already out on his own, let me affirm that the cheerful sounds reverberating around Merrion Square this week didn't begin that way, but as orders barked in the early morning frost to a team that never tasted victory, setting its face like flint toward the Hogan Stand in September.

Throughout Ireland, parents will tell their children that on the way, with their 'next level' intensity, openness and opportunism, in their quarter-final performance versus Tyrone, the Dubs made an indelible mark on 2011. Mercifully casting a long shadow over their semi-final grind versus the still striving Donegal, theirs was as good a display as had ever been seen, in any code.
