Keep cutting and there will be nothing to grow

There are some in our society still in denial about the cause of and solution to our economic difficulties.

Rather than face the reality of where right-wing economic policies, low tax rates and corporate greed has brought us, there are those who glibly call for further wages cuts and the slashing of social welfare payments.

These are not people who are willing to put their hands in their own pockets and pay higher taxes. Cutbacks, they say, are for others.

The 400,000-plus unemployed did not cause our economic difficulties. They are the victims of it -- doubly so as they also have seen welfare payments cut by 5pc.

Keep cutting and there will be nothing left to grow.
