Jobs boost falls flat as energy grants are cut

The recent jobs initiative included plans to create 2,000 jobs by doubling funding to improve the energy efficiency of homes.

A week later I rang the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland to find out how much was available under the new scheme. Nearly every type of grant for insulation under the scheme has been reduced by a fifth. And grants for alternative energy in the home have all been abolished bar solar panels.

Brian Lenihan announced a €30m tax relief for home insulation works this January, yet this seems to have been forgotten.

So, in all, the new minister has cut or abolished nearly every insulation and renewable energy grant and cynically announced this as a jobs boost.
