Jealous snobbery

Sir -- Having just read Louise McBride's article on pensions (Sunday Independent, August 21, 2011), I was taken by how the headline "Your bin man's pension: better than yours" may prove an interesting snapshot of the times we now live in when some historian looks back.

It really sums up the snobbery and jealousy with which certain members of our society look down on other members of this society when they are tasked with cleaning up after their mess -- and, in the process, quite possibly rendering a far more important service to this country of ours than penning articles in a Sunday newspaper.

Imagine what we could do without for longer: a few weeks without a refuse collection, or the same time spent without the Sunday Independent (quality thereof notwithstanding)!
