It's time to end deep mining

THE recent media hysteria surrounding the Chilean miners was surely misdirected towards storytelling, when there should have been a more critical stance on mining.

The continuous rapturous applause as the trapped miners came to the surface overshadowed the dangerous reality of deep mining and the extreme risks involved.

The very fact that the miners were trapped for so long proves that mining safeguards, especially in third-world countries, are nowhere near what they should be.
