It's personal

• The Visitation and Mahon Report both illustrate clearly the falsity of 'republicanism' and 'Christianity' as they have been practised in Ireland.

The failure of the former to be equal in its dealings with all citizens has its origins in the teachings of the Irish Catholic Church on exactly what morals are: they are not just sexual mores.

The nation requires not only a new constitution, but an immediate and urgent reform of taxation and governmental practices. The church needs to return to the teaching of the Classics, study of the early Irish church and a broader teaching of scripture.

But above all, Irish citizens need to start taking personal responsibility for their nation -- for a nation that is morally bankrupt is in a far more perilous place than one that is financially bankrupt.
