Israel is singled out for special treatment

Kevin Myers asks why those organising the Irish ship to Gaza have not spoken out against injustice elsewhere in the Middle East (Irish Independent, June 24).

The answer is simple. They have. They have also organised numerous protests and demonstrations in support of the democracy movements sweeping the Arab world.

Mr Myers asks why there is no international humanitarian flotilla to Syria or Libya. Again, the answer is simple. Gaza is the only port on the Mediterranean closed to shipping because of a naval blockade and the only coastal area in the world that cannot access its own territorial waters.

The real question to be asked is why governments around the world, including our own, have singled Israel out for special treatment by exempting it from the application of international law.
