Irish Lives

• The 'Irish Lives' Saturday supplement is really fantastic. Unfortunately, I can remember most of the subject matters firsthand and a lot of them are uncanny.

In this week's article by Anita Guidera, up jumped the antimacassar, which is long since extinct. It probably enjoyed popularity in the 19th century but was last seen around the 1960s.

Anita, while probably giving away her age, described it very well -- but for newcomers, the background is that men of a certain class used to use a horrible oil in their hair that could ruin soft furnishings. The oil in question was Macassar Oil, hence the name of the protection piece.
