In the EU as one

Sir -- The headlines here this week have screamed "£300 per family to bail out the Irish", but, perhaps as I'm a sad single, I won't have to fork out quite so much. As far as I'm concerned, Ireland's very welcome to it.

Other nonsense include "Ireland holds out the begging bowl" -- these are loans to get over bad times, we've all done it.

I'm so old now that I can remember -- back in '75, wasn't it -- when England went on a three-day week (turn out the lights on Thursday to save on power) and we had to go to the IMF for a huge chunk of cash.
