How the train is a pain in the wallet

I recently took the train from Ballina to Dublin, with a single ticket costing €48. This price included the pleasure of the train terminating in Portarlington where I was forced to take a bus for the rest of the trip, adding an hour to the journey time. I also discovered recently that a return train ticket from Dublin to Cork now costs €71. (For the same price, you could get return flights to almost any major European capital).

With such value for money on offer, why do the Government and the folks at Iarnrod Eireann scratch their heads when people flock to their cars?
