How has Unicef been 'damaged'?

Sir -- The Unicef Ireland statement published in the Sunday Independent on July 31 indicates that the board dismissed its executive director Melanie Verwoerd on the grounds that her continued tenure was "a negative issue for the success of Unicef Ireland's mission".

The annual results for 2010 do not seem to support this contention. The latest audited accounts of the charity indicate that its income increased by 89 per cent to €8.58m while the cost of generating this income increased by only €22,500 (1.7 per cent).

The catastrophe in Haiti is likely to have stimulated donor generosity, but is this trend not also a clear reflection of positive public sentiment towards the Unicef Ireland mission and confidence in the leadership?
