Hobson's choice

• Please help me: which of the statements below should I believe? I cannot believe both. Or is it the case that I cannot rely on either as true?

• "We will open up the Budget process to the full glare of public scrutiny in a way that restores confidence and stability" (Page 22 of the Fine Gael/Labour Programme for Government).

• "The Budget will be in December and I think public discussion about what may or may not be in the Budget is not helpful. . . I think we will over the next weeks and months be having those discussions around the cabinet table in Government and that's where the discussions should take place" (Eamon Gilmore, Tanaiste and Labour Party leader, speaking on RTE after comments by Fine Gael's Brian Hayes and Mr Gilmore's Labour colleague Joan Burton on December's Budget).
