Hi-tech teaching

•In reply to Phil Miesle (Letters, November 30), I never said rote memorisation was the best way to learn.

I did say that some basic things like the alphabet and tables do need to be learned by heart. It sounds as if Phil Miesle and his/her daughter have had a very good experience with the primary system. Lucky them.

Unfortunately, the standard of teaching is so variable in Ireland, that not every child may get such a good grounding. The central issue here is the standard of Leaving Certificate maths, which continues to decline, and, in my opinion, the problems start with the primary syllabus.
