I did say that some basic things like the alphabet and tables do need to be learned by heart. It sounds as if Phil Miesle and his/her daughter have had a very good experience with the primary system. Lucky them.
Unfortunately, the standard of teaching is so variable in Ireland, that not every child may get such a good grounding. The central issue here is the standard of Leaving Certificate maths, which continues to decline, and, in my opinion, the problems start with the primary syllabus.
