PEOPLE who think the near obliteration of Fianna Fail may presage a new era in Irish politics are likely to be disappointed. A Fine Gael-Labour coalition will resemble little more than a majority Fianna Fail government of old: a catch-all government ranging from orthodox business opinion to moderate labour demands.
Lemass, Lynch, even Haughey could all have lived with that.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fail resembles nothing more now than Fine Gael pre-Garret FitzGerald; a party of the rural rich with a questionable dress sense.
I'm afraid it's plus ca change.
