Helping the poor
•Hopefully, this year's UN Climate Change Conference in Durban will see agreements reached between all relevant nations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, I won't be holding my breath.
Essentially, the developed world, which is overwhelmingly to blame for the situation we are in, is requesting that developing countries refrain from industrialising, and choose instead to remain poor for the sake of the planet. Not surprisingly, the poorer countries interpret this as the West pulling the economic ladder up after them. The climate change debate looks as though it will be stalled into the foreseeable future.
In the meantime, why don't the world's nations engage themselves with another equally critical issue for the poorest of the poor: endemic and institutionalised corruption?
