Help us, troika

• With reports that Irish medical consultants get paid twice what their European counterparts get, with in many cases matching private income on top of that, it demonstrates just how much pressure a society has to be put under to challenge some vested interests. Some senior civil servants' remuneration should not go unmentioned here either.

I am beginning to hope that the troika does not depart at the end of 2013, that Ireland does not exit the bailout programme until the job of re-structuring is properly done. If some sectors escape unscathed, they will be even more advantaged than before, and more able to yield undue influence.

Every society has a structure of vested interests. We are now having to move to a Germanic model, and the quicker we do so the better.
