Hats off to Taoiseach for Cloyne Dail speech
ENDA Kenny's speech in the Dail on the Cloyne Report was very good.
The report looked at how the lapses into child protection procedures occurred in the diocese, in spite of the Irish bishops' firm policy on this that has been firmly in place since 2001.
The church had a national board for safeguarding children also doing diocesan audits at this time.
The board's own report in 2008/9 expressed serious concerns and reservations on how these were handled in Cloyne.
The State then followed up on that report, which shows that the Irish Catholic bishops are serious in their effort to be vigilant and that the safeguards are mostly working.
The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, has said much the same things as the Taoiseach, on the historical failings to seriously protect children within the Church.
Whatever else Mr Kenny may do right or wrong in Government, he did a good job in the Dail that day.
