•I refer to your rugby correspondent Tony Ward and his article (Irish Independent, November 1) on why the haka should be dispensed with in the professional era. Hugh Farrelly might also be described as less than enamoured by its performance.
While I agree with both gentlemen on the psychological advantage it affords the New Zealand representative side over their opponents before a match, I would on balance be sad to see it disappear.
I think there is nothing more laughable than homing in on the very odd Anglo in the New Zealand side performing this idiotic ritual, as alien to his culture as it is to the opponents at the other end of the pitch. Some of them even look embarrassed.
