Griffith's key role is acknowledged
Madam -- May I congratulate your paper on the extensive article on Arthur Griffith as 'Unknown hero of our nation' by Jonathan de Burca Butler (Sunday Independent, December 29, 2013). He writes correctly that de Valera, Collins and Griffith were the major players in the drive for independence, but that there is no Beal na Blath for Griffith and consequently his memory has faded. Griffith's memorial is Dail Eireann itself. He conceived of it in 1904 and became its President in 1922.
May I say I am somewhat bemused by the inclusion of James Joyce in the title of Anthony J Jordan's new biography, Arthur Griffith with James Joyce & WB Yeats -- Liberating Ireland.
