Great sportsmen can brighten gloomiest day

• Tuesday morning, March 12, started off a miserable day – which was added to by the news that it was likely that the first day of the Cheltenham festival would be called off due to the weather.

However, my heart was lifted a little when later the news came that it was to go ahead.

That afternoon I and so many other lovers of national hunt racing were treated to a masterclass in jockeyship when Ruby Walsh rode his fellow jockeys to sleep and in the process rode three winners – the last of which was on Quevega, a mare that had not run for a year and was trying to win this race for the 5th successive time.
