Sir -- The problem with making Michael D Higgins president of the Republic, would be that he might, at the drop of a hat, hijack the army and take them off to liberate Tibet or Palestine, or further indulge us in a string of equally lost causes.

And if Gerry Adams had his way, we would get Caoimhghin O Caolain up the Aras. If this happened, even in a bad dream, it could be deduced that the lunatics had indeed taken over GTB Shaw's open-air asylum.

Likewise, we can skip the embarrassment of appointing the other Micheal as a candidate. It's not a place for a retired colourful GAA commentator.
