Generous spirit was misdirected
Madam -- Having read Melanie Verwoerd's book When We Dance, can I say she is a courageous woman and the language of her determination shines through in breaking with family tradition to offer fairness and hope to South Africa in standing against apartheid.
She brought hope and determination to our country too as South African Ambassador to Ireland, and in her honest love of helpless children.
Her generous qualities of unconditional love were misdirected, as her generous instincts were caught up with a flawed man. Gerry Ryan was no saint; neither am I nor you. His partner whom he loved and for whom he confessed his love, is left feeling 'awkward' and adrift. She was there for him when some friends refused to give him a loan. She loaned him money when he was snuffing it up his nose, unknown to her, when he was 'desperate'. Is that not love in action?
