Gaza agony

• I'm puzzled by Declan Moriarty's claim (Thursday, November 22) that my letter "displays both ignorance and arrogance towards the Palestinian people". Your readers can view the letter online and will see that my comments were exclusively aimed at Gazan militants who – far from comprising a majority of Palestinians – can't even claim to represent a majority of them.

I can point to numerous unprovoked incidents over the past several months and years when Gazan militants fired missiles at Israel eliciting no retaliation from the Israelis. A major breakthrough for long-lasting peace will be reached when Hamas can control its own wilder elements. He might say that's pathetic but it's also a central aspect of the recent, very welcome truce.
