I FIND it difficult to understand the jury, in the case of the garda killed in Donegal by an escaping car, being instructed to ignore the fact that the victim was a garda.
This was a garda in the course of duty attempting to apprehend the driver and was hit by the car in the attempt.
What the excuse was is irrelevant. There are no mitigating circumstances. The driver should have obeyed legal garda instruction to stop.
Does this mean that the gardai have no protection from the courts while in the course of their duty protecting us?
Gardai risk their lives each day to protect us. They deserve the full protection of the legal system in their efforts.
Like the suggestion that drunken drivers work in A&E, maybe lawyers and judges should spend some time on the night shift with the gardai and experience the wanton abuse, seen as entertainment, by drunks and others.
