Garda oath on bible is not right

THE photograph accompanying a news report (Sunday Independent, February 20) of the Garda Reserve graduation ceremony at the Garda College in Templemore shows some of the police officers apparently swearing an oath while holding up what is clearly the Holy Bible.

If they were swearing an oath, surely they should have ALL been doing so on a copy of the Irish Constitution and that alone.

There should be no religious symbolism (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Seventh Day Adventist, or whatever) in a ceremony that empowers police officers to uphold the law impartially in a society that is not only multi-faith but includes those of us of no religious faith.
