Mary Kenny (Irish Independent, Monday) is right to say that French women almost match Irishwomen for high fertility rates, but wrong to say that "France was the last country in Europe to give women the vote -- in 1945."
France gave women the vote in 1944 followed by Italy in 1945. Their Swiss sisters were not enfranchised until 1971. Women are still not allowed to vote in Vatican City. Should the Catholic Church allow women to become cardinals then suffrage in Europe will be complete, though this seems unlikely in the near future.
