Free society must allow blasphemy

PAT Mullins (Letters, March 17) suggests that it is ''demeaning and unworthy'' of the Irish Independent to print Ian O'Doherty's "blasphemous" use of the term 'Jesus Christ'.

Ireland is no longer governed by the morals of a church whose atrocious crimes of abuse could be deemed ''demeaning and unworthy".

In a free democratic society, freedom of speech is a fundamental value which must be upheld; in a free democratic society, people are upset by what people say and write.
